Day trips outside Tokyo

When you are going on exchange at a university in central Tokyo, although there is much fun to be had in central Tokyo, you may want to see more of what Japan has to offer. However, since there aren't many breaks during the semester, you may not have the funds to travel very far – after all, we are university students. I myself experienced this dilemma during my time in Japan, but in Japan, from February and March there is a long holiday, so I have had plenty of chances to explore the areas around Tokyo! Here are some of my top recommendations for day trips you can have.
This city is very popular for those wanting to experience a more youthful city life than in Tokyo. There is a direct train line going through major stations like Ikebukuro and Shinjuku-Sanchome going to both Yokohama station and Motomachi Chuukagai (Chinatown), which is very convenient. It takes around 1 hour by train, which costs at most 700 yen (~£4.30) one way. From Yokohama station, you can experience Cosmo world and its rollercoasters, and then head over to the port where you can go shopping at WorldPorter's, before heading to Chinatown. The Chinatown in Yokohama is the biggest in Japan, and here you can experience Chinese cuisine in its many restaurants and street vendors. In my opinion, the street food is not that great, so I would recommend you try out the restaurants instead. Yokohama at night offers amazing illuminations of the city, and if you head down to the port, you can see beautiful views of Yokohama lit up at night. Down by the port is also the infamous Gundam, shown below, and there are shows every hour where the Gundam moves.
Another coastal location, this place offers a much more peaceful atmosphere than Yokohama. From Shibuya station, it takes a little over an hour to get to Kamakura station, however, the ride there offers beautiful views, especially on a sunny day, where it feels like you are in an anime. It also only costs around 1000 yen one way, or around £6-7 (depending on the exchange rate). Across from the station is a red torii gate which marks the shopping street. Here you can shop for many local specialties.
In Kamakura, there is also a Big Buddha statue, which is apparently the 2nd biggest Buddha statue in Japan and is easily accessible by bus from the station. After this, you can take the Enoden Line train down to the seaside, and experience the famous Kamakura views.
From there you can also get to the Island of Enoshima, where you can do things such as explore its temples and see the night-time illuminations. Another recommendation of mine is spending a day in Enoshima Spa, and is suited for people who want to just relax and unwind. The local specialty of Kamakura and Enoshima is shirasu, which is a tiny white fish.
If you like nature and hiking, there are a variety of mountains around Tokyo that you can easily hike in one day. The one I would recommend is Mount Takao. It is a 40min train ride from Shinjuku station, costing around 570 yen (~£3.50) one way. The hike only takes two hours, but it is better to hike slowly to enjoy the views. If you want, there is another route that hikes through two other mountains and takes around 3-4 hours to get to the top of Mt Takao. However, be careful since there are a lot of steps on the route. From the top of Mt Takao, you can get a clear view of Mt Fuji. On the way back, there is a store called [Gomadokoro Gogen Chaya]. I recommend that you try the black sesame dango from this shop! And finally , if you want, you can avoid walking the last part of the hike by taking the cable car down to return to the station.
If you try any of these places out, I'd love to hear your opinions about them!
