さっぽろ雪まつり

一年中、日本の各地で多くの祭りがたくさんある。

しかし、授業があるの間や、留学先によって、ある祭りを見に行きにくいかもしれない。

そのため、最初の学期が終わってからの春休みには、住んでいる都市以外である祭りを見るための一番の機会だろう。

春休みである、２月や３月ごろ、祭りがたくさんある、特に、北日本にはさまざまな冬祭りがある。

多くの冬祭りがあるが、「さっぽろ雪まつり」が一番有名な祭りの一つである。

さっぽろの雪まつりとは

さっぽろ雪まつりは、毎年、だいたい２月の第一週に、北海道の札幌（さっぽろ）市に行われる祭りである。

祭りは札幌の真ん中の大通公園にある巨大雪像で有名である。

これらの雪でできた像は50年代に学生によって作られ始めた。

時とともに、この雪像を作って活動がだんだん今日の国際的に有名な祭りになった。

毎年、国内外から200万以上の観光客がさっぽろ雪まつりに訪れる。

雪祭りの主な会場の大通公園には、雪像や土産店や屋台などがたくさんある。

また、大通公園から南へ10分で歩いたら、すすきのの街について、そこでは雪でできた像ではなく氷でできた像を見つかれる。

この両方会場も、昼間にもちろん見えるが、夜のイルミネーションに見たほうがいいかもしれない。

いくつか像にも、アニメーションによるイルミネーションがある。

これが祭りの見どころの一つである。

旅行　―　札幌へ行き方は

北海道以外で勉強している留学生にとって、札幌への最も安くて簡単な行き方は新千歳空港まで飛行機で行って、そこから、電車に乗って、30分で札幌の中心に着く。

東京や関西からの飛行時間は一時間ぐらいで、往復のチケットが約12000円かかる。

または、東京から、電車で行く場合は８時間以上かかり、交通費は30,000円である。

そして、札幌に着いてからは、バスや地下鉄を簡単に使える。

札幌 / 北海道 (観光名所; 名物; スキー…)

札幌市内と近辺には見どころが多くある。

しかし、札幌といえば、食べ物や飲み物で有名だろう。

食べ物では、札幌のスープカレー、味噌ラーメン、「ジンギスカン」などがおすすめである。

寒い日にはぴったり食べ物である。

飲み物では、札幌は「サッポロビール」が一番有名である。

そのビールの工場は札幌にあって、工場のツアーを通して、札幌の歴史を少し学んで、様々な種類のビールも飲むこともできる。

札幌の景色を全部見たかったら、札幌駅のJRタワーや大通公園のさっぽろテレビ塔に登ることがおすすめです。

歴史に興味があれば、札幌時計台の古い建物や、北海道大学の博物館に行くことができる。

最後に札幌市内に北海道神宮という、美しくて、重要な神社である。

また、もっと時間があれば、北海道の他の場所をぜひ行ってください。

おすすめは、最初、国立アイヌ民族博物館の近くにある温泉街、登別（のぼりべつ）である。

次は小樽（おたる）で、札幌から１時間で行けて、古い建物が多くて、きれいな運河もある。

函館（はこだて）も、江戸時代からの開港場だったので、面白くて古い西洋風の建物が多い。さらに、有名な五稜郭（ごりょうかく）もある。

最後にウィンタースポーツが好きな人は、ぜひスキー場に行ってください。北海道のスキーは世界でも1番の一つと言われている。

今年に私は友人と一緒に行き、とても楽しかったである。

本当に、留学生活中で、一番の経験の一つだと思う。

Sapporo Snow Festival, Hokkaido

Introduction

For every season, there are many festivals in Japan.

But during term time it may be difficult to see festivals outside of the city in which you are studying.

And so, the spring holiday, usually during February and March is a great time to see festivals.

During this time there are many winter festivals, particularly in northern Japan.

One of the most popular festivals during this time is the Sapporo Snow Festival.

The festival takes place in Hokkaido’s capital city Sapporo.

The festival usually begins on the first weekend of February and lasts one week.

The Festival

The festival mostly takes place in Odori Park, in the centre of Sapporo.

In Odori Park you can find the giant snow sculptures for which the festival is famous.

You can walk through the park and see the sculptures throughout the day, but they are probably best seen at night when they are illuminated.

Also, in Odori Park there are shops selling local produce and souvenirs, as well as a food market.

10 minutes south of Odori there is another area that is part of the festival, called Susukino.

There you can find a street filled with ice sculptures.

Some of these sculptures are even more beautiful than the snow sculptures in Odori.

Travel

The easiest and cheapest way to get to Sapporo is definitely to fly.

Return flights from Tokyo or Kansai Airport cost around £65.

The main airport for Sapporo is called New Chitose Airport.

You can also get to Sapporo by train, but this is far more expensive and time consuming.

However, if you do have some time and are happy to spend a bit more, you could travel through the Tohoku region before getting to Hokkaido to make it worthwhile.

Foreigners residents in Japan can purchase the JR East Pass which covers most of northern Honshu and Tokyo.

This pass costs around £120 and includes 5 days of travel on any JR trains or buses in the Tokyo and Tohoku regions.

So, you could visit some places like Sendai, Akita, or Aomori before travelling onwards to Hokkaido and Sapporo.

Once in Sapporo itself, it is relatively easy to get around by bus or subway.

As a foreign resident you can also purchase a JR Pass specifically for Hokkaido.

Sapporo / Hokkaido (Attractions; Food and Drink; Skiing…)

There are many things to see and do in and around Sapporo.

A particular highlight of Sapporo though is its food and drink.

For food, Sapporo’s soup curry, miso ramen, and “Genghis Khan” (lamb barbecue) are all highly recommended. Particularly since they are all great cold weather food.

In terms of drinks, Sapporo is most famous for its Sapporo Beer. You can even take a tour of the Sapporo Beer Factory.

While you are there you can learn about the company’s history and taste some of its beers.

Meanwhile, if you are looking for a bird’s eye view of the city, you can go up JR Tower at Sapporo Station, or Sapporo TV Tower in Odori Park.

If you are more interested in history, you can see the Sapporo Clock Tower, or visit the Hokkaido University Museum.

Finally for Sapporo, there is also Hokkaido Jingu, situated in a beautiful park.

Then, if you plan to stay for longer in Hokkaido, you can also explore some places outside of Sapporo.

Three cities to recommend are: Noboribetsu, a hot spring town with the National Ainu Museum nearby; Otaru, which is only an hour from Sapporo, where there are many old buildings and a beautiful canal; and Hakodate, which was a treaty port and also has many beautiful Western buildings, as well as an impressive star shaped fortress.

Finally, if you like winter sports, definitely try and visit a ski resort; the skiing in Hokkaido is said to be some of the best in the world.

Conclusion

The Sapporo Snow Festival is a fantastic festival.

Sapporo is an amazing city with so much to see and do.

Similarly, Hokkaido is a truly special region of Japan.

However, it is cold around that time of the year, so remember to bring enough warm clothes!
