Life in Hokkaido
Hello everyone, I’m Nicole a third-year student at the University of Edinburgh. Currently, I am studying abroad at Hokkaido University in Sapporo. Hokkaido University is known for being one of Japan’s biggest campuses and is truly beautiful.
みんなさん、こんにちは。エジンバラ大学の三年生のニコールです。今、札幌の北海道大学で勉強しています。北海道大学は日本最大のキャンパスの一つで有名できて、すごくきれいですよ。
In this blog, I want to discuss public transport, the campus, and the dormitory as well as my experience in Japan which will hopefully be beneficial to anyone considering studying here.
このブログでは、札幌旅行、キャンパス、学生寮、日本での経験についてお話したいと思います。
Transport
When you first arrive at New Chitose Airport in Sapporo Japan I recommend taking the Rapid JR train to Sapporo, it takes about 37 minutes and costs ¥1,150 to Sapporo station. However other options include a bus (longer but perhaps cheaper option) or taxi (very expensive option).
札幌の新千歳空港に初めて着くとき、JR電車で札幌まで行くことをおすすめします。しかし、他のオプションには、バスかタクシーがあります。
Once you arrive at Sapporo station in the heart of the city, just outside is a taxi rank and a bus station, very convenient for when you arrive exhausted and just want to reach your dormitory. Alongside the simple convenience of this station, it is also connected to Stella place – one of my favourite places to visit, as not only can you ride the train and subway there, but it is also a massive shopping centre with restaurants, a gaming centre, and a cinema.
札幌駅に着いたらすぐ外にタクシー乗り場とバス停があり、疲れて寮に着きたい時にとても便利です。私のすてきな場所の一つであるステラプレイスにも付いています。電車や地下鉄に乗れるだけでなく、大きいショッピングセンターの中にはレストラン、ゲームセンター、映画館でもあります。
Public transport in Japan is easy once you get the hang of it. One of the most useful items to have for traveling is the IC Card. These cards can be purchased at ticket machines, and then cash can simply be added to the card which saves you the hassle of standing in line and buying a single ticket every time you travel around Sapporo. The IC card for Hokkaido is called the Kitaca, which can only be used in Hokkaido, I, however, went for the Suica IC card which not only works on the Hokkaido JR line but also trains in the Greater Tokyo, Niigata, and Sendai regions. Lastly, I have the SAPICA IC Card which can be used on the subway in Hokkaido.
札幌での旅行は、慣れれば簡単だけど、ICカードを買うことをお勧めします。そして、現金をチャージして、旅行時にカードを使用できます。北海道のICカードはKitacaと呼ばれ、北海道でしか使えません。Suica ICカードは北海道ＪＲ電車だけでなく、東京・にがた・せんだいエリアでもご使えます。最後に、北海道の地下鉄で使えるSAPICA ICカードを持っています。
These cards can also be used on buses, trams, and even some vending machines.
また、これらのICカードはバス、トラム、自動販売機でも使用できます。
Campus and Dormitory
The dormitory I currently stay in is called the International House Kits 8 building 5 which is convenient as it is within walking distance to the University as well as shops and train stations. If you choose to live in the dormitory here in Sapporo you will find it small but comprised of everything you need, from your own private bath and shower to your small kitchen and desk space. The monthly rent and water bill at Kita 8 is around ¥ 29,000 per month, however, this does rise in price in the winter months and the Kita gas bill for the gas and electric fluctuates depending on how much you use. These bills arrive in your mailbox every month and can be paid only in cash at convenience stores such as Seicomart or online using the line pay app, however, a Japanese bank is required for this app.
私が今住んでいる寮はインタナショナルハウス5号館です。北海道大学やお店、駅に近くて便利です。ここ札幌の寮に住んでいると、小さいながらも、自分のバスとシャワーから小さなキッチンとデスクスペースまで、必要なものがすべて揃っています。北8の月額家賃と水は月額29,000円ぐらいですが、冬になると値上がりします。毎月紙のビルはポストに着き、セイコーマートなどのコンビニで現金で支払うか、LINE Pay アプリを使用してオンラインで支払うことができますが、このアプリには日本の銀行が必要です。
Hokkaido University is located in the centre of Sapporo in Hokkaido province and is popular with many visitors for its open spaces such as farms, forests, creeks, and pathways. In the spring and summer months, it is perfect for relaxing on the grass with friends and having a picnic.
北海道大学は、農場、森、小川、小道などで多くの人々に人気があります。春から夏にかけては、友達とピクニックをするのも楽しいものです。
If you come to Hokkaido, you will undoubtedly experience the many seasons here and the many festivals and events which coincide with these different periods such as the Sapporo lantern festival in Oct at Nakajima Park, the Sapporo White Illumination Late Nov - Late Dec, Sapporo Snow Festival Early - Mid Feb both in Odori Park.
北海道に来たら多いの季節やお祭りやイベントを経験できます。例えば、10月の中島公園の札幌ランタンフェスティバル、11月から12月まで札幌ホワイトイルミネーション、2月の大通公園の札幌雪祭りなど。
