Information about the National Health Insurance services in Japan:

Everyone who lives in Japan must be enrolled in a medical insurance. The National Health Insurance is one of them. Foreigners with a visa of over three months must be covered by the National Health Insurance, so you will have to register for it after your arrival in Japan. This is done at the city hall of the city where you live.

The National Health Insurance costs 2000 yen per month (that is approximately 13 pounds per month). After you register, you will receive a 2000 yen bill from the National Heath Insurance every month, in your mail box. It is a pink paper which looks like this:

Even if you are not ill you must pay the 2000 yen and the last date by which you can pay it is indicated in the box on the bottom left.

In order to pay for the National Health Insurance, you must bring this bill to a convenience store (Lawson, 7-Eleven, etc). There you should hand in the bill and pay 2000 yen. The cashier will give you the right-hand side part after stamping it, as a receipt.

After registering you will also receive your National Health Insurance card. This certifies that you are registered and insured and you must bring it when you go to the doctor.

By being registered, you can get various benefits for medical costs and dental care for services which accepts National Health Insurance. You can getting reduced costs for consultations and treatments, reduced costs for hospitalisation etc.

Regarding general medical expenses, the co-payment for people under 69 years old is 30% of the medical costs. This means that you will be required to pay 30% of the original costs only.

For high medical expenses such as hospitalization, under certain conditions part of the cost can be covered by the National Health Insurance.

3ヶ月以上のビザ持っている外国人は、国民健康保険が必要ですので、日本で行く後で、国民健康保険に加入しなければなりません。

国民健康保険は毎月に２０００円です。毎月にメイルボックスに付けを受けます。

病気ではなくても、２０００円を払わなければなりません。

コンビニで払わなければなりません。例えば、7-ElevenやLawsonなどで払えます。コンビニで国民健康保険の付けと２０００円を持って来てください。

それに加えて、10月ごろにメイルボックスに国民健康保険のカードを受けます。これは、本当に大切なカードです。病気になったら、医者や病院に行く時に、このカードを持ってきてください。

国民健康保険に加入したら、医者や病気や歯医者などでいろんないいことがあります。例えば、医者に相談をする時に全部払わなくてもいいです。

普通の療養費について３０パーセントだけ払わなければなりません。
