1) 17.15-18.15:
"Impactful use of Japanese characters”「インパクトのある日本語の文字の使い方」
Akiko Furukawa will offer a session on impactful and strategic use of Hiragana and Katakana in media etc. Did you notice in Japan or on the web words like ‘カタチ’ and ‘コト’? Why aren’t they written in Kanji (「形」or Hiragana 「こと」)? Did you know there are at least 5 different spellings of Ramen for the name of Ramen restaurants? What’s going on? We will look at a few authentic materials (with guidance if needed) and discuss these phenomena. Feel free to bring your examples of 日本語のおもしろい文字の使い方. I hope to see as many of you as possible!
2) 18.15-18.45:
Fumiko Narumi-Munro "Mystery of missing kana characters in Japanese Gojū-on"「消えたひらがなの謎」
Do you know why the kana character chart is called Gojū-on' 五十音 even though there are only 46 characters? Why the Japanese currency 円 is 'yen' in English? Let's look at the history of kana characters and their pronunciations and find out what happened to the missing characters.
